Product details for Synology RackStation RS4017xs+ 16bay NAS

Synology's RS4017XS+ rackmount NAS is a secure, efficient storage solution for your data. This RS4017XS+ NAS (network-attached storage) device, unlike traditional external hard drives, can be integrated directly to your network. It also needs far less power than regular PCs and offers you over enough space for all your data. It has an Intel Xeon D-1541 2.1 GHz processor. It has four Gigabit Ethernet ports. Several users can access data at the same time thanks to the 8 GB of RAM. The following data storage forms are available for this rackmount NAS system: 0, 10, 6, 5, 1 and JBOD. When using JBOD (or "just a bunch of disks") you can combine several hard drives, regardless of their storage capacity, and retain all of the storage space. This is not the case with RAID levels.

When using RAID 0, hard drives (ideally of equal storage capacities) are interconnected and work in parallel — this means a higher, faster performance as computer tasks are not handled by just one drive. However, there is no fault tolerance because data is not mirrored, which means this RAID level is better suited for high speed storage of large volumes of data. RAID 1 offers you high data security through data mirroring. A replica is created of all your data from one drive to another, meaning if one crashes you will still retain all of your information. This also means that the capacity of all your drives is halved because of duplicated content. For smaller NAS systems RAID 1 is an ideal option. Using RAID 5 means your data is split among multiple hard drives — when one drive has an error the data is copied and distributed to the other drives. With this method you can retain the storage capacity of all your drives. It's the ideal choice for larger NAS systems with more than three drives. You get a higher level of data security when implementing RAID 6, even if two hard drives fail, the system will still be operational.
