Product details for Buffalo LinkStation 520 2-bay NAS

The LS520DE-EU desktop NAS from Buffalo efficiently stores your data and files. Different from normal external hard drives, the NAS (network-attached storage) device can be integrated directly into your network. This gives all computers connected to your network access to the device and data. It offers you over enough storage space and needs far less power than regular PCs. It comes with a Gigabit Ethernet port. It has a Realtek RTD1195N Dual Core 1.1 GHz processor. Several users can access data at the same time thanks to the 256 MB of RAM. This desktop NAS system has the following data storage forms available: 0, 1 and JBOD. When using JBOD (or "just a bunch of disks") you can combine several hard drives, regardless of their storage capacity, and retain all of the storage space. This is not the case with RAID levels.

Using RAID 0 means your hard drives (ideally of equal storage capacities) are interconnected and work parallely. This increases performance and speed as the work is split bewteen multiple drives, but there is no fault tolerance. Using RAID 1 means you get high data security. This is achieved by mirroring, which simply means that your data is duplicated from one drive to another, so that if one fails, nothing is lost. This also means that the total storage capacity of your drives will be halved. RAID 1 is best suited for smaller NAS systems.
